Sol Kaho`ohalahala has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Maui County. The seasoned lawmaker's many years of service on both the Maui County Council and in the Hawai`i State Legislature, as well as years spent in an administrative capacity, provide a wide background of experience for his candidacy.

Along with an ever-present bent toward technology and innovation, Sol brings a strong native Hawaiian sensibility to his platform of long-term, sustainable economic development.

He has consistently advocated for diversifying Maui Nui's economic base through increased local food production, the development of clean renewable energy, and the fostering of forward-thinking growth that capitalizes upon Maui Nui's uniqueness while preserving its natural resources.

His concern for the quality of life for Maui County residents is always in the foreground. One of Sol's often used phrases: "I ka wă ma mua, I ka wă ma hope," refers to utilizing the wisdom and experience gleaned from the past in order to be optimally prepared for the future.

Throughout his many years in public service, Sol has been a strong advocate for government transparency and has championed the public's ability to access their legislators and representatives. His efforts helped to establish live television coverage of county council, boards, and commissions meetings on Akaku: Maui Community Television. In meetings with various civic groups, non-profits, and at community gatherings, Sol has provided individuals with tools to participate effectively with government at both state and county levels.

Sol is in his third term on the Maui County Council as the Lăna`i representative. He has also represented the Seventh and the more recently apportioned Thirteenth Districts in the Hawai`i State Legislature and also held the position of Executive Director of the Kaho`olawe Island Reserve Commission.

Previous to his work in public service, Sol represented Lăna`i on several boards and commissions, including the Lăna`i Citizens Advisory Committee and the Maui Economic Development Board. He was employed in the visitor industry as a cultural instructor and historian for Castle & Cook at the Hotel Lăna`i, the Mănele Bay Hotel, and the Lodge at Kő`ele.

As a young man, before and after his college years, Sol worked for the pineapple plantation on Lăna`i. Sol's wife Lynn is a Vice-Principal of Lăhainaluna High School and they have four children and three grandchildren.

Sol has participated on international commissions, such as the National Committee on US/China Relations, and has also crewed on a Hőkule`a voyage to the South Pacific. Sol is a seventh generation Lanaian; his family lineage and ties to the island can be traced back 700 years.
