JobsUnfortunately, we are experiencing the down side of what can happen in a mono-economy, where focus is placed on one economic activity. Tourism and real estate development have been the main drivers of Maui's economy for the past four decades. Those of us who have been calling for economic diversity now have our work cut out for us. At the very least, we must direct our energies toward self-sufficient agriculture. It is foolhardy for Hawaii to continue to import foods. We must encourage agriculture and ramp up food production. Small stores, supermarkets and restaurants should be purchasing goods from local farmers. On a larger scale, we should redirect our economic efforts toward renewable energy research and development. Our efforts should also be directed toward waste management and developing sustainable methods for utilizing municipal solid waste for energy production. With multiple natural energy resources at our disposal, economic activity in clean renewable energy is a good investment; energy is the largest sector of the world economy. Our colleges and universities should become major centers for research and development in this area. Our ability to foster sustainable development for Maui Nui will depend on our ability to seek alternatives to an economy that is supported by the current need for oil. Developing a Maui Nui that is self-reliant, self-sufficient, energy independent and sustainable is conducive to island living. We have everything to gain by going in this direction.
